US student visa from Bangladesh: F-1 steps, documents and interview
The F-1 student visa process in order: admission and I-20, fees, the DS-160, the interview and the documents to carry. Check official pages for fees and dates.

Quick answer: most international students who study in the US full-time use the F-1 visa. In order: get admitted and receive an I-20, pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa fee, book the interview at the US Embassy, and attend with your documents. Fees, appointment rules and wait times change, so use the official US government pages.
This guide gives the order of steps and what to prepare. It states no fee amounts, because we could not check the current ones here.
The steps
- Admission. Apply to a US school that is authorised to enrol international students.
- I-20. The school issues the Form I-20 after admission and proof of funds. Check that your name, dates and the amount on it are correct.
- SEVIS fee. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online and keep the receipt.
- DS-160. Fill in the online visa application, upload a photo and keep the confirmation page.
- Visa fee and appointment. Pay the visa application fee and book the interview through the official system for the embassy that serves you.
- Interview. Attend on time with your documents.
- Decision. The officer may approve, ask for more documents or refuse. Passport handling follows the embassy's instructions.
Documents to carry
- Passport and the DS-160 confirmation.
- The I-20 and the SEVIS fee receipt.
- The visa fee receipt and appointment confirmation.
- Transcripts, test scores and the admission letter.
- Proof of funds that matches the I-20, with sources.
- Anything that shows your ties to home and your study plan.
The interview
The interview is short. Officers want to understand why this school and course, how you will pay, and your plans after study. Answer clearly and truthfully, and do not memorise long speeches.
- Know your course, school and why you chose them.
- Be able to explain who is paying and where the money comes from.
- Show that you plan to return after your studies.
A common reason for refusal in general is that the officer is not convinced the applicant will leave the US after studying (this is the "immigrant intent" rule). Strong, truthful answers and documents help.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking an appointment through an agent or website that is not official. See embassy appointment scams.
- Presenting funds you cannot explain. See our guide to bank statements for a visa.
- Giving different answers from your documents.
- Applying too late for the start date.
Main idea: follow the order (I-20, SEVIS, DS-160, fee, interview), keep every receipt, and prepare to explain your course and your funding honestly.
