BCS exam: process, syllabus and preparation plan

The BCS exam has three stages: preliminary, written and viva. How the process works, how to read the syllabus and a simple plan for the months before.

Quick answer: the BCS (Bangladesh Civil Service) exam is run by the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC). It has three stages: a preliminary test, a written exam and a viva. The exact marks, subjects, age limits and quotas are set in each circular, so read the current BPSC circular before you plan.

We give the structure and a plan here. We do not repeat numbers from memory, because they change between circulars.

How the process works

  1. Circular. BPSC announces the exam and the number of cadres and posts.
  2. Online application. Eligible candidates apply online and pay the fee as the circular instructs.
  3. Preliminary (MCQ). A multiple-choice test that selects candidates for the written exam.
  4. Written exam. Subjects in the circular, usually including language and general subjects.
  5. Viva. An interview that tests knowledge, communication and suitability.
  6. Results and cadre allocation. Based on marks and choices, within the quota rules.

How to read the syllabus

  • Download the syllabus from the current circular. Do not use an old PDF.
  • List the topics under each subject and mark what you already know.
  • Look at the weight of each subject in past papers, and give more time to high-weight and weak areas.

A simple preparation plan

Months before Focus
12 to 8 Read the syllabus. Build basics in language, maths and general knowledge.
8 to 4 Cover every subject once. Make short notes. Solve past questions by topic.
4 to 1 Full mock tests. Revise notes. Work on weak topics.
Final month Timed practice, quick revision, rest and health.

Habits that help

  • Study daily, even for short blocks, instead of long irregular sessions.
  • Read a newspaper regularly for current affairs.
  • Practise writing, because the written exam rewards clear answers.
  • Join a study group only if it keeps you on schedule.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Starting from an old syllabus or unofficial notes.
  • Studying every book and never revising.
  • Ignoring the viva until the last week.
  • Paying anyone who promises a post. Government jobs are not sold.

Main idea: read the current circular, build a calendar from the syllabus, practise with past questions and mocks, and keep revising.
