Austria student visa from Bangladesh: requirements and steps
Studying in Austria for more than six months needs a student residence permit. The steps, the documents to prepare, and who to ask.

Quick answer: if you will study in Austria for more than six months, you need a student residence permit. Stays up to six months use a visa. The main requirement on the OeAD page is admission to a higher education institution. Other requirements, such as proof of funds, health insurance and accommodation, are set by the authorities, so confirm them on the official pages for your case.
This guide explains the steps. It does not state fees or amounts that we could not confirm from an official page.
Who needs what
- Stay of up to six months: a visa.
- Stay of more than six months: a student residence permit.
- The permit has one version without a mobility programme (requirement: admission) and one for mobility or exchange programmes (admission plus confirmation of participation).
Because the length and content of your stay decide which one applies, OeAD advises contacting your intended institution about a year in advance.
Steps
- Get admission. Apply to an Austrian university or college. Check their international admissions page for documents, deadlines and language requirements. Study in Austria (studyinaustria.at) is the page OeAD points to for admission.
- Ask which permit applies to you. Use the official sources below. Do not rely on an agent.
- List the documents. Prepare your passport, admission letter, academic documents, proof of funds, health insurance and accommodation details as the authorities ask. Official rules change, so check the current list.
- Check where you apply. The OeAD page does not say whether you apply at an embassy or in Austria. Ask the Austrian authorities or your university, and book the appointment only through the official channel (see our warning on fake booking sites).
- Apply early. Processing time is not stated on the OeAD page, so leave extra time before your semester starts.
- Plan your first weeks. OeAD Student Housing is one accommodation option listed on its page.
Documents to prepare early
- Passport with enough validity.
- Admission letter.
- Certificates and transcripts, with certified translations if asked (see our documents guide).
- Proof of funds in the form the authorities accept. Our Germany blocked account guide shows how this works in a neighbouring country, but Austria's rules are different.
- Health insurance and accommodation details.
Mistakes to avoid
- Applying for a short-stay visa when your course lasts longer.
- Copying a document list from a forum instead of the official page.
- Paying a person to "guarantee" an appointment or a visa.
- Starting too late. OeAD suggests about a year of planning.
Main idea: get admitted, find out whether you need a visa or a residence permit for your length of stay, prepare the documents the authorities list, and use only official channels.

We could not open the Austrian government's own student permit page (it returned a not-found error), so we state no funds amount, tuition fee or application place. Check the Ministry of the Interior and the Austrian foreign ministry.
