Germany blocked account 2026: the €11,904 student visa requirement explained

Most non-EU students need to prove they can pay for a year in Germany, usually with a blocked account. What the 2026 figure is, how the monthly release works, what else an embassy may accept, and what Bangladeshi applicants should check.

Quick answer: for a German student visa in 2026, most guides give the proof-of-funds figure as €11,904 for 12 months, released at €992 a month, usually held in a blocked account (Sperrkonto). These guides are from banks and consultancies, not government pages, so confirm the number with the German embassy before you transfer money. Last checked: 22 October 2026.

What a blocked account is

You pay the full year's amount into a special account before you travel. The bank "blocks" it and releases only the monthly portion to your regular account after you arrive in Germany. The point is to show the visa office that you can support yourself while you study.

The figure, and why it changes

  • €11,904 for 12 months, which is €992 a month, is the amount most 2026 guides give. One source says it is set by the German Federal Foreign Office for 2025/26.
  • Another source ties it to the maximum student support (BAföG) that German students can get, which would make it change when that support changes. Older pages still show €11,208, the previous figure.
  • Applicants usually show 12 months, even if the course is longer. One source gives €23,808 for 24 months for preparatory courses.
  • Providers often ask you to transfer a little more than the blocked sum to cover their fees. One guide estimates about €12,131 with one provider and €12,181.80 with another, so read each provider's current terms.

Other ways to show funds

One guide notes that embassies may accept other proof, such as a scholarship or a formal obligation letter from a person living in Germany (a Verpflichtungserklärung). Whether this is accepted for you depends on the embassy, so ask in writing before you rely on it.

Steps for a Bangladeshi applicant

  1. Get your admission letter first. You need a university place before you can start the visa.
  2. Ask the German embassy in Dhaka for the current proof-of-funds rules and which providers or banks it accepts.
  3. Choose a provider and compare fees and what they ask for.
  4. Check how to send the money. Sending money abroad for study is subject to foreign exchange rules, so ask your bank which documents it needs.
  5. Collect the provider's confirmation and add it to your visa file.
  6. Book the visa appointment early. Our summary of student visa changes in 2026 shows how rules are tightening in other countries.
