Quick answer: the Japanese government's MEXT scholarship is mostly applied for through the Japanese embassy in your own country. The 2027 round has already closed in most countries, so the realistic target is the next round, and the work to get ready starts months before it is announced. Last checked: 22 October 2026.

The details below come from embassy pages and scholarship guides. Amounts and dates change, and each embassy publishes its own guidelines, so read the notice from the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh when it appears.

What it is reported to cover

  • Tuition: admission, tuition and exam fees are exempted at the host university.
  • Round-trip airfare.
  • A monthly allowance. For the 2027 intake, guides report about ¥143,000 for research students, ¥144,000 for master's students and ¥145,000 for doctoral students, and ¥117,000 for undergraduates, with a small extra for designated regions. These amounts are subject to budget changes.
  • A Japanese preparatory course of about six months, if it is judged necessary.

Who can apply

  • Citizens of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. Japanese citizens, including dual nationals holding a Japanese passport, are not eligible.
  • Age limits: under 35 for research students and under 25 for undergraduates, according to guides. Check the notice for the exact date your age is counted.
  • Good health, and the academic background the notice asks for. GPA and degree rules differ by embassy, so rely on the official notice.

How the embassy route works

Most applicants apply through the embassy, which runs its own selection with a written exam and an interview. Embassy rounds for the 2027 intake were reported to run from about April to July 2026. As one example, one embassy's research-student deadline was 5 pm on 11 June 2026. Bangladesh's dates may differ, so do not assume them.

What to do now

  1. Choose your research field and write a plan. Research students describe what they want to study and why in Japan.
  2. Look for a professor whose work fits. Some applicants contact a Japanese professor before they apply, so an introduction can help.
  3. Prepare your documents: transcripts, certificates, passport, reference letters and a recent health certificate.
  4. Practise for the exam. Embassy exams usually test English and subject knowledge, and some include Japanese or maths. Read last year's notice for the subjects.
  5. Watch the embassy's page and social posts from the spring, when notices usually appear.
  6. Prepare for the visa and cost of living. Our master's abroad plan shows how to line up the steps.

Other funding to plan for: scholarships for Bangladeshi students 2027 and funded PhD abroad.

The embassy pages are official. The guides repeat the same amounts but are commercial, and we could not open the Irish embassy page directly, so we used its summary. None of these is the Bangladesh notice.
