UK scholarships for Bangladeshi students: Chevening and Commonwealth
The main UK funding routes for Bangladeshi students: Chevening, Commonwealth scholarships and university awards. Who each is for, and how to prepare.

Quick answer: the main UK funding routes are Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships for graduate study, plus awards from individual UK universities. Funding for international undergraduates is more limited and mostly comes from universities. Each programme has its own eligibility, deadlines and conditions, so read the official page of each one.
We state no amounts or dates, because we did not read the current official notices.
The main routes
| Route | Who it is usually for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chevening | People applying for a UK master's, who already have a bachelor's degree and relevant work experience | The eligibility rules, the work experience required and the conditions after the award. |
| Commonwealth scholarships | Master's and PhD applicants from eligible Commonwealth countries | Which categories exist and how to apply (through the awarding body, not an agent). |
| University awards | Applicants to a specific university, at several levels | Each university's scholarship page, with its own deadline and rules. |
| Other schemes | Programmes that the UK or British Council run with universities, which change over time | Whether your country is included that year. |
If you are applying after HSC, Chevening and Commonwealth are not for you yet. See scholarships after HSC and the list of government scholarships.
How to prepare
- Find the programme page and read the eligibility line by line.
- Check the deadline. Many close months before the intake, often in autumn for a September start.
- Prepare your documents: passport, degree certificates and transcripts, references, a personal statement or essays and proof of English where required.
- Choose your course and university early, because some programmes ask for specific choices.
- Write honest essays about your goals and your plan to use the degree. Use real examples.
- Prepare for an interview if the programme has one.
UK visa and proof of funds
Winning a scholarship does not remove the student visa steps. Read the official UK visa guidance for the funds and documents you must show. See our study abroad guide.
Mistakes to avoid
- Applying to Chevening or Commonwealth without the required degree.
- Missing the early deadline.
- Paying anyone for a "guaranteed scholarship". See how to spot a fake offer.
- Copying essays. Selectors read many and notice.
Main idea: for graduate study look at Chevening, Commonwealth and university awards, read each official page, apply early and write honest essays.

- The official Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and university pages are the sources. We did not read them here, so statements about eligibility are general. Check each page.
