The Australian student visa (subclass 500) in order: choose a registered course, enrolment, health cover, funds, the genuine student test, application and biometrics.

Quick answer: to study in Australia you generally need the Student visa (subclass 500). In order: choose a registered course and provider, accept the offer and get a confirmation of enrolment (CoE), arrange health cover (OSHC), prepare proof of funds and other documents, meet the genuine student requirement, apply online, give biometrics and a health check if asked, and wait for a decision. The Department of Home Affairs sets the rules, and they change, so use its official page.

We state no fees or amounts, because we could not open the Home Affairs page when writing.

The steps

  1. Choose a course and provider. The provider must be registered to teach international students.
  2. Accept the offer and pay any deposit the provider asks for, through its official channel. You then receive a confirmation of enrolment (CoE).
  3. Arrange health cover. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is normally required for your stay. Ask your provider how to buy it.
  4. Prepare your English proof if the course or visa asks for it. See study abroad without IELTS.
  5. Prepare proof of funds. See our bank statement guide for how to document it.
  6. Meet the genuine student requirement. You explain why you want this course in Australia and how it fits your plans, in a way that shows you intend to study.
  7. Apply online through the official system and upload documents.
  8. Biometrics and a health examination if requested.
  9. Decision and travel. Follow the conditions of the visa.

Documents you usually need

  • Passport and photos.
  • CoE and proof of health cover.
  • Proof of funds, with the source.
  • English test results if required.
  • Academic documents and a study plan or answers to the genuine student questions.
  • Police certificates or a health check if asked.

The genuine student requirement

Australia replaced the older "genuine temporary entrant" test with a genuine student requirement in 2024. You answer questions about your circumstances, your course and your plans. Write honest, specific answers and make sure your documents match.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a provider that is not registered.
  • Weak or copied answers to the genuine student questions.
  • Funds that you cannot explain.
  • Using an agent who promises a visa. See how to spot a fake offer.
  • Applying too late for the start date.

Main idea: choose a registered course, get the CoE and health cover, document funds honestly, write a genuine student statement and follow the official Home Affairs steps.
