BCS viva: common questions and how to prepare
The kinds of questions a BCS viva board tends to ask, and how to prepare honest, clear answers. This is a guide to categories, not a list of leaked questions.

Quick answer: a viva is a conversation about you, your background and your readiness for public service. Boards vary, so prepare categories of questions rather than memorised answers. We do not claim any list is "what will be asked", and we state no marks or rules. Use the official circular for those.
For the whole process, see BCS exam: process, syllabus and plan.
Question categories
| Category | Examples of what is asked | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| About you | Your background, studies, family, interests | A short, honest introduction that you can say calmly. |
| Your place | Your district, its history, geography and issues | Learn facts about your home area and what is changing there. |
| Your subject | Basics of your degree | Revise the main ideas and be able to explain them simply. |
| Current affairs | Recent national and international events | Keep short notes with dates and sources. |
| Service and ethics | Why you want this service, how you would handle a hard situation | Think of real examples and say what you would do and why. |
How to practise
- Record yourself answering aloud, and listen for filler words and long pauses.
- Practise with a friend who asks follow-up questions.
- Prepare an honest answer to "why this cadre?" and "why public service?".
- Be ready to say "I do not know" calmly, and add how you would find out.
On the day
Arrive early with your documents in order, dress neatly, greet politely, listen to the whole question and answer clearly. Do not guess facts you are unsure of.
Common mistakes
- Memorising a long speech.
- Claiming knowledge you do not have.
- Not knowing facts about your own district.
See BCS written preparation too.
Main idea: know yourself, your place and your subject, and answer honestly.
